Fine & Sunny with a Little Blizzard: Weather and Genealogy

Benjamin Franklin may have written “nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes” but he got it wrong. The weather is always certain – in its uncertainty. Extremes of hot and cold, sun, wind, rain, snow and the effects of all of these on the earth have shaped countries, states, cities and towns and all of the people who reside therein. A plague of locusts after prolonged rain, and the crops are gone. People migrated for many reasons, flooding, starvation and drought among them. They also died from hyper- or hypothermia, massive storms and other weather events.

In this talk, Patrice Connelly will examine how extremes of weather may have affected all of our family trees, and look at ways of finding weather records so that you can draw some new conclusions about your ancestry. From plane crashes due to wind shear, and dust storms due to drought, you’ll be blown through a tour de force of nature to land in the middle of your family tree.

About Family History Connect:

Our 'members-only' series, Family History Connect, features themed sessions focused on a particular area of genealogy research.

Sessions are generally facilitated by one of the Society’s wonderful volunteers and will usually take place online. These sessions are open to all current members of the Society.

These sessions are an opportunity for you to discuss research strategies and approaches, get ideas for source leads and next steps.

About the Family History Connect series:

If you would like to facilitate a Family History Connect session, please get in touch with us via email at admin@sag.org.au
