Unravelled ... The Life of Elizabeth Fulloon, Superintendent of the Parramatta Female Factory, 1824-1827 by Heather Garnsey

Join us for a special online book club event as we dive into a gripping work of Australian colonial history with author Heather Garnsey herself. Together, we’ll explore the remarkable life of Elizabeth Fulloon, described by Governor Darling as a woman of “extraordinary bodily strength and energy of character,” whose story sheds new light on women, power, and resilience in early New South Wales.

The book traces Elizabeth’s journey from her Huguenot roots in London to her pivotal appointment in 1823 as Superintendent of the Parramatta Female Factory—one of the most significant institutions for women in colonial NSW. Her three intense years there sit at the heart of the story, offering fresh insights into the Factory’s daily operations, the lived experiences of the women within it, and the tensions that ultimately erupted in the infamous Riot of October 1827.

Whether you’re passionate about women’s history, colonial Australia or the untold stories behind well-known events, this is a rare opportunity to discuss the book directly with its author and ask questions that bring the past vividly to life.

What is the SAG Book Club?

SAG Book Club events are free to SAG members. Each event runs via Zoom for about an hour. Sometimes we will be joined by the book’s author or another special guest, and sometimes we’ll have opportunities for small discussion groups to share our reactions and insights with fellow SAG members: www.sag.org.au/BookClub
