Conversations Never Had is the title of a play being developed by SAG member John Denlay, inspired by his family history research. John’s play is set in a suburban Sydney home on the evening of the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (Hallowe’en). It explores the themes of forgotten stories of Ireland and the Irish in Sydney, and how they can help us understand the Australia of today. John will talk about his research process and the development of the play.
Overview: When seven generations of a stoic Sydney Irish family are brought back to life by a father’s family history discoveries, he and his teenage daughter are challenged by harrowing forgotten histories of oppression whilst their ancestors confront unexpected Godless futures. Amidst such painful change, will this family find ways to rest in peace?
