Topic: Occupations

The Counties that will be presented by members at this meeting will be Durham, Surrey and Berkshire. All resources will be sent after the meeting with the recording and chat.

The topic for this meeting is Occupations as well as a short presentation on the various Directories and resources which are available for researching English ancestors who may have been involved in industry and occupations.

  • Basketmaking - is considered the oldest craft in the world. Willow tended to be the material of choice in England and in medieval times almost every village had its basketmaker. Numbers have gradually dwindled through enclosure acts, industrialisation, and outside competition so it is now designated an endangered craft although there is now a concerted effort to rejuvenate the craft.
  • Tea industry – a short history of the development of the tea industry in England including related occupations in the selling of tea.

We ask that if any attendee has researched a particular occupation or industry and they are willing to share their research and resources, we would appreciate you 'putting your hand up' to present during the meeting. No need to provide a Powerpoint presentation unless you want to - just a quick talk about an occupation would be fabulous. Any resources you have can be popped in the chat.

if we have time at the end of the session, we will open up to a general Q&A session where we ask everyone attending to help other researchers by giving suggestions or guidance on finding resources if you are able to assist.

There are two ways to ask questions:

1. Before the meeting by clicking here, and

2. Via the Chat Box any time during the meeting.

Suitable for the beginner as well as the more experienced researcher.

This is an online session using the Zoom platform.
