  A series of meetings have been planned for participants of the 2022, 2023 and 2024 programs (and previous programs) who are interested in continuing to work with each other on developing their skill in "starting to solve their DNA dilemmas".

  About the Presenter:

  Jeff Madsen has had a long career in Information Technology using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software to prepare maps for Government, private enterprise and family researchers.

  He has used the Historical Land Records Viewer (HLRV) since 1999 to access digitised Parish Maps and, more recently, to research NSW Historical Land Records for property owned by ancestors.

  It became evident that this Spatial knowledge could be used in genealogical research. Using maps and investigating areas of historical geography would enhance family stories by finding information beyond names and dates.

  This three-part course introduces genealogists to the practical use of DNA segments in family history research. Moving beyond match lists and shared cM amounts, the course explores how segment analysis, chromosome mapping, triangulation, and DNA Painter can help solve more complex research questions.

  Topics include endogamy, shared ancestral communities, multiple possible relationships, overlapping ancestral lines, and cases where traditional shared-match analysis alone is inconclusive.

  Alongside practical research applications, the course will also explore chromosome mapping and “DNA painting” as a way to better understand DNA inheritance and visually map ancestral contributions across the genome.

  Using a real-life case study in which segment analysis is being used to disentangle several possible ancestral connections, participants will learn how segments can help isolate ancestral lines and test genealogical hypotheses.

  Designed as a practical, step-by-step introduction rather than a highly technical deep dive, the course focuses not only on how to work with segments, but also when segment analysis is genuinely useful in genetic genealogy research.

  No prior experience with segment analysis is assumed and attendees do not need to have complex or endogamous DNA cases to benefit from the course.

  About the Presenter

  Donna Rutherford is a London-based genetic genealogist originally from New Zealand.   DNA Research Group - Our Discussion Group is targeted at our more experienced DNA group members.  The group is committed to providing leadership on DNA Practice in the Society and keen to work with others to increased their shared understanding of the exciting field of genetic genealogy. Attendees are required to undertake pre-work for the discussion, distributed prior to each meeting.

  Throughout the year group meetings will include:

  • Peer Review, via member case studies including analysis of documented evidence;
  • Brick Wall Analysis, via member case studies - ideas for future research;
  • Year in Review, plus scoping for future events;
  • Development of process documents to assist members with their research.

  At our August meeting we will be discussing Shaping the Future of the DNA Discussion Group. The DNA Discussion Group has always been about sharing ideas, challenging assumptions, learning from one another and helping solve complex research problems.   About the Presenter

  Fiona Brooker’s family history journey started over 40 years ago with two 19th century marriage certificates taking her research into New Zealand, Australia, North America and the United Kingdom. While living in England, Fiona studied with the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies and obtained a Higher Certificate in Genealogy.

  Memories in Time (www.memoriesintime.co.nz) grew from her desire to help others trace their family history. She is a speaker at international and national conferences and enjoys teaching practical workshops on family history, DNA and AI, in person and virtually.  Fiona works with clients to take their research from folders and their computer, into the hands of their family.

  In 1846 Governor FitzRoy raised the need for a ‘central colonial authority’. It took a further 55 years to achieve this vision on 1 January 1901.

  There were so many steps in between. What were the colonial agendas? Where did Fiji and New Zealand feature? And then there were the shearers, the 

  Suffragettes, churches, Irish, progressives and conservatives. All playing a part.

  How did all these threads come together to finally form the Federation of Australia?

• TOUR: Hidden Histories of Rookwood Cemetery

  Join us for a walking tour through the heritage areas of Rookwood Cemetery, the largest in the southern hemisphere, and is hosted by the Friends of Rookwood.

  
  

  This tour will visit areas not seen on previous tours

  The cemetery has been operating since 1867, with over a million interments to this day. This tour provides a snapshot into Sydney’s 19^th century history, where you will hear a wide range of stories of those who have been buried here. Victorian funerary decoration and symbolism abounds in the area visited and it includes many monuments moved from the Devonshire Street Cemetery. 

  Tour Leader

  Geoff Bovard, the tour leader, has been volunteering with the Friends of Rookwood for seven years, and has been leading tours for the Friends for four years. He has been a SAG member since 2007, and is an active Assistant in the SAG Library. His interests include Australian, English, Irish and Scottish family history.

  The Friends of Rookwood

  The Friends of Rookwood is a non-profit organisation with the aims of promoting the interests of Rookwood Necropolis; promoting public awareness of the social, historical and cultural aspects of Rookwood Necropolis and cemeteries in general; and raising funds and providing voluntary assistance for restoration projects within Rookwood. the majority of the registration fee for this tour will be donated to The Friends of Rookwood to support their projects.

  On the Day

  Tour attendees should meet at 10 AM at the café located on the corner of Memorial Avenue and Necropolis Drive, just inside the Strathfield Gates of the cemetery via Weeroona Road.

  Please note: Each tour lasts for approx. 3 hours and includes about 3km of walking. Participants should wear comfortable closed toe walking shoes (e.g. joggers or hiking boots) and bring a hat, sunscreen and water.

  Manorial Records:

  We are very fortunate to welcome an invited speaker Dr Caroline Adams, a well- known English historian, archivist, and palaeographer, who will give us an introduction to manorial records – what they are and how to find and use them for genealogical research.  Caroline has also provided handouts for this session. Caroline enjoys interactive meetings andis looking forward to your questions. 

  English Cities:

  You may remember we suggested we follow up our completed County presentations by group members with similar short format (10 minute) presentations on English Cities.  The co-leads will present background information on which places are deemed to be cities and how that came about.  In addition, several short City presentations will be given.  So you, our members, can decide if you wish to accept this challenge and present in our future meetings.  Please let Diana know if you would like to contribute a City presentation at later meetings when we meet on the 3^rd.

  Topic: Jenny Wright - author of upcoming publication Chest of Gold

  Jenny Wright will present on her family history research process behind her forthcoming book Chest of Gold. 

  Chest of Gold is a character driven narrative set in the nineteenth century Australian goldfields, a significant chapter in Australia’s colonial history. The central characters are Sarah Gale and Ah Chin. Sarah was born to emancipist parents Mary Shields and William Gale in Penrith in 1842. Ah Chin, a storekeeper, came from Canton.

  In 1862 Sarah married 24-year-old Ah Chin in Sofala, NSW. They had six children in their time together as they made their way to the goldfield town of Nerrigundah on the NSW south coast then to Ravenswood and the Palmer River in north Queensland. Along the way, Sarah became a bush midwife while Ah Chin was a storekeeper, miner, publican, baker and always had a garden.

  Their lives interested with other Chinese Australian couples, particularly Sarah’s good friend Elizabeth Long Poy (later Ah Sang and Swee Sang). Other friendships with neighbours in their final destination Charters Towers lasted across generations.

  As the matriarch of the current day Archer family Sarah rests in the Charters Towers cemetery. Although Ah Chin mysteriously disappeared in the late 1870s, Sarah maintained contact with the Chinese community and remained Sarah Ah Chin for life.

  Commune and Chiesa: Unlocking Online Italian Town and Church Records is a four-week online course delivered in partnership by the Society of Australian Genealogists and Family History Academy, and taught by specialist researcher Barbara Bombaci, CG®. It is designed for family historians who are ready to move beyond what migration records can tell them and work directly in the sources their ancestors left behind.

  Italian civil and church records can be extraordinarily rich, capturing multiple generations of family information in a single document, yet they vary considerably by region, period, and record type, and navigating what exists, where it is held, and how to use it requires both knowledge and strategy. This course addresses that directly, guiding participants through records spanning three distinct historical periods and two parallel record-keeping systems, civil and ecclesiastical, with a focus on building transferable skills rather than one-off finds.

  Barbara Bombaci brings specialist knowledge of Italian records, repositories, and research strategy to every session. Participants leave not just with new techniques but with a genuine understanding of the Italian archival landscape — and the confidence to keep researching long after the course ends.

  What happens to oral history collections when funding ends, projects conclude, or the people who created them move on? If you’re unsure if an oral history will still be safe and accessible in 10, 20 or 50 years’ time, it may be considered precarious.

  Join us for a discussion with the Precarious Oral Histories Project, a national initiative working to better understand the extent of at-risk oral histories across Australia, and, as a first step, raise awareness of these collections.

  The pilot phase of the Project developed evidence of a preservation crisis facing oral history collections in Victoria. Now, our work extends to focus across the nation, starting with NSW and the ACT.

  Fiona Brooker’s family history journey started over 40 years ago with two 19th century marriage certificates taking her research into New Zealand, Australia, North America and the United Kingdom. While living in England, Fiona studied with the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies and obtained a Higher Certificate in Genealogy.

  She’s a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the Professional Historians of Aotearoa New Zealand (PHANZA). She has served as both President and Treasurer of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG) and organised multiple conferences and family history expos.

  If you already have DNA chromosome analysis skills and are planning to use the GDAT database tool to manage your DNA information, you might wish to join our GDAT chromosome analysis user group.  SAG user groups are aimed at ‘members helping members’ so this is a collaborative working group aimed at sharing information and knowledge.  You must be a SAG member to join this group.
  

  Sessions will include a short presentation on a specified topic identified by the group, followed by discussion between group members, then round table Q&A regarding the product.  We will meet 3-4 times a year on Saturday mornings using the Zoom platform.  We won’t be recording the sessions, so you must attend live.

  Important things to note:

  1. Discussion will be focussed on utilising the GDAT software for DNA analysis, incorporating new chromosome analysis techniques and tools.
  2. Members must have an understanding of the principles of chromosome analysis before joining the group;
  3. Basic chromosome analysis questions WILL NOT be discussed, except in the context of using the GDAT product. 

  Pre-requisite Knowledge for using GDAT:

  1. Be computer literate;
  2. Have the ability to work with spreadsheets and large data sets;
  3. Have been working with DNA results at chromosome sites such as GEDmatch, FamilyTree DNA and My Heritage ideally for over 12 months;
  4. Understand the concepts of chromosome analysis and can apply them in practice, in particular:
     1. Be able to differentiate between shared matches and shared segments;
     2. Be able to interpret when matches are ICW on a segment;
     3. Understand triangulation concepts and how to identify Triangulated Groups at each DNA site.

  Before joining our user group, it is best if you have already:

  * Watched the video and undertaken all the tasks in the Quick Start Guide - Setting up; 

  * Read how the developer (Becky) approaches her DNA analysis, recognising the tool allows for multiple variations - Becky's Process;

  * Set up at least one profile, including having added a pedigree for that profile and have uploaded segment data from at least one DNA company, such as GEDmatch, FTDNA, 23&Me or My Heritage.  GEDmatch is probably the easiest to start with, utilising Tier 1 tools is recommended for the triangulation report  (but not essential).

  Any issues arising consult the user guide.  If it's not covered in the user guide, submit the question for discussion at the next meeting by posting in the SAG GDAT User Group on Facebook. If the enquiry is more urgent, utilise the ‘Official’ GDAT Facebook User Group.
