Webinar - 08:00pm - 09:00pm  In the workhouse

Location: Your place!

Presenter: Helen V. Smith   Bookings essential: $12, Members only

The dreaded workhouse came into being in England due to the introduction of the New Poor Law legislation and the establishment of the Poor Law Unions in 1834.  Life in the workhouse was deliberately made to be as unpleasant as possible so that people didn’t think it was an easy option but instead a place of last resort and for many it became a final resting place. This has created a number of records of assistance to family historians.

Many of us have wonderful photos in our family collection. Sometimes we know the subject, and sometimes we only suspect we know the subject. Learning to date a photo can help to rule out a subject, or to provide supporting evidence that our guess may be correct. In this talk you will learn about the different types of photos and the periods in which they were produced, and other clues to help you assign a date to the photos.
