Hands On @120 - Handwriting Workshop

At our first ever Hands On @120 session, manuscripts from the SAG collection and other samples will be used to learn how to decipher old handwriting and practice transcribing documents. If you have a document you cannot read, bring it along!

Hands On @120 - Mapping our ancestors

Most events in our forebears’ lives occurred at places which were usually recorded, especially if they had any connection with officialdom. Maps help to locate the places and put them into a local context of street, town or countryside. The Society has a large and varied collection of maps, and this talk is designed to present representative examples and show how they can be used for understanding a family’s history. Limit 15.

Using artefacts, tools, SAG photos and other records, Ralph and Danielle will give you a ‘hands on’ insight into the lives of your Australian tradie ancestors and how to research them.

Geneablogging is an excellent platform for sharing family stories and documenting your research journey. In this workshop Jill Ball will guide each participant in using free Blogger software from Google to set up a family history blog.

The National Library of Australia has a vast database of online resources that could hold clues for your genealogy. Learn tips for searching newspapers; how to download copies; add tags and comments, and create lists. Limit 14.

Get one-on-one help with your Australian family history brick wall. Appointments will be for 1.5 hours and include a half-hour consultation to analyse your problem and create a draft research plan, followed by one hour of one-on-one guided research in the SAG library (online and/or in SAG collections).

Book online and you will then be allocated an appointment time. Attendees will be provided a template to submit a description of their problem prior to the day.

Excel is a great tool for organising, analysing and presenting vast quantities of information, which makes it great for family history. Some prior knowledge of Excel is assumed, as the session will not cover the basics. Limit 14.
