EVENTS

We organise a comprehensive range of activities, including lectures, workshops, tours, and group meetings that are available to everyone.                                                  Additionally, we conduct exclusive free and discounted events for our members.

ONLINE DELIVERY: mOST events are delivered online using Zoom - CHECK DETAILS of In-person and hybrid offerings.

Online bookings can close early to support administrative requirements, however, late bookings may be made by calling the office during office hours on (02) 9247 3953 or sending an email to admin[at]sag.org.au.

With the exception of some events, usually those focussing on genetic genealogy where there may be privacy issues, most of our online sessions are recorded, so even if you cannot attend at the scheduled time you can still book and receive the recording.  The event listing will specify if the event is not being recorded.


If an event is listed as partially recorded (usually an event related to the use of genetic genealogy techniques) this means that any  presentations given as part of the event are recorded; discussions and sensitive case studies are not recorded. 


Most of our events are open to non-members as well as members. However, non-members will pay a bit more.

Registration types: The member category is used by members of the Society. Members must be logged in to make a booking.  Everyone else should book using the non-member category.

  • Expression of Interest to attend 2024 Analysing your DNA using Chromosome Analysis course

    This is an expression of interest only to assist us to gauge the level of demand for this course.

    We will contact you with further information about the registration process once we have a better idea of how many people wish to undertake the course. 

    Due to the advanced nature of this course a survey will need to be completed by prospective attendees to demonstrate their proficiency in the pre-requisites listed below. We will contact you about this when the EOI process has closed.

    Are you ready to take your DNA results to the next level using chromosome analysis? Do you have your DNA data at a site with a chromosome browser and want to understand how to work with your results?

    Join Veronica Williams and other SAG DNA Discussion Group members for a 10 part course designed to build on your existing knowledge of working with your DNA and develop your skills in chromosome analysis.

    The series is not suitable for beginners, it suits intermediate DNA researchers interested in learning more complex DNA techniques.

    The course will be made up of four modules, supplemented with six workshops that will include case studies and opportunities for discussion. Whilst foundation concepts will be discussed in Module 1, later sessions will assume knowledge of those DNA concepts and tools.

    Sessions will likely be scheduled for Saturdays, over a three-four month period.

    Pre-requisites for participants: 

    • Ability to work with spreadsheets, including basic formatting and data manipulation;
    • Competence in basic DNA analysis techniques as outlined in the section Starting to work with your DNA results - the basics
    • Have been working with their DNA results for over 12 months
    • Priority will be given to those who have completed the SAG AncestryDNA Course

    The course will be presented online using the Zoom platform.

    Seven Part Online Course

    Would you like to investigate your family history but have no idea where to start or have you previously signed up to an online platform but felt overwhelmed by all the information available?

    The Society of Australian Genealogists, Australia’s oldest family history society, is excited to again offer our seven part online course “Beginners Practical Introduction to Family History.”

    Over the course of seven sessions (two hours per session) you will learn about:

    • Key tools - family history software platforms, file organisation, research plans
    • Traditional records (document based) research – types of records, locating records
    • Electronic databases – Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Findmypast and more
    • Oral History – preparation and techniques for interviewing family members
    • Other resources such as Family History Societies, online forums and education options
    • Introduction to DNA research including legal and ethical considerations
    • Various ways to chart, share and publish your findings, including privacy and copyright concerns

    While the course will focus on records available in Australia, North America, the United Kingdom and Ireland we will also touch on locating records in other countries and the skills you will learn can be applied to researching ancestors from anywhere in the world.

    All sessions in this course will be recorded. If you are unable to attend live you will still be able to catch up with all the content.

    FACE TO FACE WORKSHOP

    Join well-known family historian and published author, Dr Betty O’Neill for a one-day introductory workshop on Writing family history.

    Are you curious about your ancestors? Do you have a fascinating great-aunt you’d like to write about? Or maybe some lost relatives, secrets, lies or family mysteries to investigate? Betty’s questioning and researching turned out to be a bit of a detective story and yours could too!

    The workshop will be limited to 16 participants.

    About the Presenter:

    With a background in science as well as humanities, Kerry worked in computer programming before starting teaching family history classes in 1997. She has worked as a genealogy researcher and presented at many family history events in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

    Kerry has also served on SAG’s Education Committee from 2004 to 2023, including many years as convener. Kerry has also previously served on the Society's Diploma and Certificate Committee. Kerry joined the SAG Board in 2018.

    Kerry is a past Director of Australian Studies for the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. She has authored DNA for Genealogists (2011) and Arrivals in Australia from 1788
    (2015) as well as various genealogical Handy Guides for Unlock the Past.

    The focus of this month's Let's Talk About... event is one that is close to the heart of all family historians. We will be discussing archives.

    Facilitated by SAG's own Archives Project Manager, Dr Alexandra Mountain, we will be hearing about a number of diverse archives from Australia and Overseas.

    Our speakers are:

    • Yvonne Masters representing Manx National Heritage. This is the organisation that manages the Isle of Man's natural and cultural heritage, including its Library and Archives
    • Ben Hollister representing Lutheran Archives, the national archive for the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand which is based in South Australia. 

    Ben Hollister has been a professional historian since 2007, and a historical researcher since 1997. He owns and operates History Helper, a historical research business, and is contracted at Lutheran Archives as a Project Archivist and Project Digitisation Technician. His research work focusses on German-Australian migration research, general family history services, and specialist family history services for adoption and Stolen Generation cases. H e also offers education, mentoring and publishing services to other researchers, and historical tours, presentations and digital literacy mentoring to the general public. Ben has provided professional Bio.docx services to the AIATSIS Family History Unit and the US production of ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’.

    This session of Family History Connect | Understanding your BigY700  will be offered online via Zoom and facilitated by Society volunteer, Chris Hingerty. Limit of 5 participants. 

    By agreeing to be part of this session, you are aware that:

    • Participants will be asked to have a pre-session discussion with the facilitator.
    • This session is open to people who have already received their  BigY700 DNA test results, and want to discuss what the results are telling them and what to do next to achieve their research goals.
    • All participants must be prepared to share and discuss their results with the group.
    • Participants do not need to know how to read or analyse their results as this will be demonstrated during the session. 
    • There will be instructions at the session re how to log on to FTDNA, locate your results and how to share the screen on Zoom.
    • Participants will introduce themselves by responding to the following questions: Who did you test? What research question are you trying to answer i.e. why test?

    Please note that, due to privacy concerns, no recordings or screen shots can be taken during the session.

    Counties: Hampshire and Dorset

    As usual, these short county presentations provide some general information about the county including the flag, its history and any flag or county day which is celebrated. Presenters should include a relevant and useful selection of sources (not expected to be exhaustive) that may be available for family history research in the county being presented.

    Topics: Social and political issues that may have affected your ancestors in England.

    We will look at a few of the political and social reforms in England which had a major effect on the lives of the population and may have led to families moving or migrating from their traditional home town or county.

    We will look at:

    • Enclosure Laws of 1773 - where traditional common land held in an open field system was 'enclosed' which ended people's rights to access this land
    • Peterloo Massacre of 1819 in Manchester which was a pro-democracy meeting
    • Tolpuddle Martyrs of 1834 Dorset - birth of trade unionism for agricultural labourers
    • Truck Acts of the 19th Century and the decline of the Tommy Shop System
    • Divorce Laws during the 19th Century which contributed to female equality in marriage

    We would welcome your input into any other political or social reform your family may have been affected by. There is no need to prepare a PowerPoint presentation, unless you want to! You can just talk to the group.

    If we have time, we will open up to a general Q&A session where we ask everyone attending to help other researchers by giving suggestions or guidance if you are able to assist.

    This will be a very collaborative, friendly and fun meeting with participation from attendees.

    Learn about maps using different content and sources of maps for you to use. The second part of the session shows how to display your ancestor’s lives using Google Maps and how this can then be shared with others.

    Join Society volunteer Jeff Madsen to explore ways in which you can map your ancestors as this session follows on from the recent series on NSW Land Records.

    Are you fairly new to family history or been researching for less than three years? Do you know the basics, but need some ongoing support to develop your core research skills?

    In SAG’s newest online course, Beginners Research Methods, you will work on your own family history under the guidance of Danielle Lautrec over a period of seven months. Included in the course are two lectures, two workshops and six group discussion sessions (fourteen contact hours in total). Danielle will teach you to plan your research, identify research priorities and research questions, cite your sources and other important research skills. Each technique will be applied to your own family history, to help you progress your research.

    Prior completion of the SAG’s Beginners Course (or comparable course) is recommended, but is not essential.

    The Monumental-Heritage team at Rookwood work across NSW, completing everything from small cemeteries (Sodwall's Inn, Macarthur family Belgenny Farm, Maitland Jewish, etc) to War Memorials (Gosford, East Maitland, etc) to specialist lime-based stonework conservation (Vaucluse House, Hyde Park Barracks) as well as traditional lead lettering and monumental repairs.

    Join us online to hears from two of their team about their roles and the techniques they use to repair and preserve heritage buildings and monuments.

    About the Presenters: 

    Matthew Johnson is a heritage specialist at Rookwood/MMPLM. In addition to supervising the monuments team, he leads heritage stonework and War Memorials projects. Matthew has an MA in Heritage Conservation (University of Sydney) and acts as a heritage advisor for Rookwood/MMPLM as well as being the General Manager of the Rookwood Necropolis Land Manager.

    Sach Killam, Monumental-Heritage team leader at Rookwood/MMPLM. Sach is a cemetery conservation heritage specialist who leads the ongoing Monument Safety & Conservation programme (in its eighth year at Rookwood, and rolling out across all MMPLM sites in the last few years). Sach has worked closely with the Friends of Rookwood, both as a volunteer and in completing significant conservation works at cost. Sach is also a long term member of the National Trust Cemeteries Committee as well as the Australian Standards Committee BD-071 for Monuments and Vaults.

    For this special event, Society CEO Ruth Graham will be joined in discussion by Tessa Morris-Suzuki author of the soon to be released book A Secretive Century: Monte Punshon’s Australia.

    This new book reveals Australia's modern transformation through the life of an extraordinary woman.

    In a life that spanned more than a century (1882 to 1989) Monte Punshon witnessed crucial events in Australia’s modern history. She was a pioneer radio broadcaster, travelled the country with children’s theatrical troupes and defied convention with her active involvement in the underground world of Queer Melbourne in the 1930s. Her love of travel took her to China and Japan, and she studied their languages before becoming a warden in a wartime internment camp for Japanese civilians.

    Punshon’s complex personality reflected both her middle-class Methodist upbringing in Ballarat and her restless search for new experiences and for her own identity. At the age of 103 she gained fame for speaking publicly about her lifelong love for women.  

    Monte grew up in a secretive century. She lived in a society where appearances mattered, and keeping them up often involved creating silence around ancestral origins, painful memories and personal desires.

     About the author

    Tessa Morris-Suzuki is Professor Emerita of History at the Australian National University, where she held the positions of Distinguished Professor and Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow. In 2013 she was awarded the Fukuoka Prize (Academic) for contributions to Asian studies. Morris-Suzuki is the author of 25 non-fiction books, including The Past Within Us: Media, Memory, History; Exodus to North Korea: Shadows from Japan's Cold War; Japan's Living Politics: Grassroots Action and the Crises of Democracy; and On the Frontiers of History: Rethinking East Asian Borders. She has also published two historical novels, The Searcher and The Lantern Boats.

    Genealogical DNA Analysis Tool (GDAT) User Group

    If you already have DNA chromosome analysis skills and are using the GDAT database tool to manage your DNA information, you might wish to join our new user group.  SAG user groups are aimed at ‘members helping members’ so this is a collaborative working group aimed at sharing information and knowledge.  You must be a SAG member to join this group.

    Sessions will include a short presentation on a specified topic identified by the group, followed by discussion between group members, then round table Q&A regarding the product.  We will meet on Saturdays at 10.00-12.00 using the Zoom platform.  We won’t be recording the sessions, so you must attend live.

    Important things to note:

    1. Discussion will be focussed on utilising the GDAT software for DNA analysis;
    2. Members must have an understanding of the principles of chromosome analysis before joining the group;
    3. Chromosome analysis questions WILL NOT be discussed, except in the context of using the GDAT product.

    Pre-requisite Knowledge for using GDAT:

    1. Be computer literate;
    2. Have the ability to work with spreadsheets and large data sets;
    3. Have been working with DNA results at GEDmatch, FamilyTree DNA, My Heritage, or 23andMe for over 12 months;
    4. Understand the concepts of chromosome analysis and can apply them in practice, in particular:
      1. Be able to differentiate between shared matches and shared segments;
      2. Be able to interpret when matches are ICW on a segment;
      3. Understand triangulation concepts and how to identify Triangulated Groups at each DNA site.

    Before joining our user group, it is best if you have already:

    * Watched the video and undertaken all the tasks in the Quick Start Guide (Setting up) - https://sites.google.com/view/genealogical-dna-analysis-tool/home/video-tutorials#h.t5ehfiqzxea3

    * Read how the developer (Becky) approaches her DNA analysis, recognising the tool allows for multiple variations - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iO5BceetmtucroYUJeyWsMSjslV4IQYH/view

    * Set up at least one profile, added a pedigree for that profile and have uploaded segment data from at least one DNA company, such as GEDmatch, FTDNA, 23&Me or My Heritage.  GEDmatch is probably the easiest to start with, utilising Tier 1 tools is recommended for the triangulation report  (but not essential).

    Mining the English Censuses: Beyond Discovering Your Family

    We are all familiar with using the censuses as a source for our English ancestors. There we can discover a range of information including occupation, location, names of children, and movement around the county and/or country. However, a great deal more can be learned from these censuses.

    In this presentation we will explore how the censuses can be used to gather different kinds of information such as changes in locations over time, the spread of names in various area, and the predominant occupations in a given place and time. In particular ‘A Vision of Britain Over Time’ and ‘Histpop.org’ will be introduced and the many forms of census information, both micro and macro, available on these sites.

    About the presenter:

    Yvonne has a background in education, both as a teacher, particularly of English and History, and as a university lecturer in teacher education. She has been researching her own and her husband’s family histories for over 40 years and, now retired, genealogy is her passion, making her question how she ever found time to work! After retiring, Yvonne decided to undertake study in the area of genealogy and family history and has completed the UTAS Diploma of Family History, the Pharos Intermediate Certificate of Family History, and also the suite of Pharos One Name Study units. She has also completed SAG’s Certificate of Genealogical Research and Diploma of Family Historical Studies. A member of SAG, as well as team member of the AI and Tech Special Interest Group, Genealogy SA, the Guild of One-Name Studies, the Society One-Place Studies, and the Isle of Man Family History Society, Yvonne is undertaking genealogy research across many areas.

    The Society's Certificate in Genealogical Research is designed for those with more than three years family history research experience and who have gained at least some elementary research skills and a broad, even if basic, knowledge of resources available. To complete the coursework you are expected to extend your research beyond what can be found on the internet and to use local libraries and family history society collections, either in-person or remotely where possible. 

    The course consists of 8 assignments undertaken across a year. For each assignment you will be given the outline of what is required, together with some guidance to consider in preparing your submission. The assignments have been carefully selected to reflect the sorts of skills needed by genealogists and the course is essentially practical exercises in self-directed learning from experience.

    Genealogical DNA Analysis Tool (GDAT) User Group

    If you already have DNA chromosome analysis skills and are using the GDAT database tool to manage your DNA information, you might wish to join our new user group.  SAG user groups are aimed at ‘members helping members’ so this is a collaborative working group aimed at sharing information and knowledge.  You must be a SAG member to join this group.

    Sessions will include a short presentation on a specified topic identified by the group, followed by discussion between group members, then round table Q&A regarding the product.  We will meet on Saturdays at 10.00-12.00 using the Zoom platform.  We won’t be recording the sessions, so you must attend live.

    Important things to note:

    1. Discussion will be focussed on utilising the GDAT software for DNA analysis;
    2. Members must have an understanding of the principles of chromosome analysis before joining the group;
    3. Chromosome analysis questions WILL NOT be discussed, except in the context of using the GDAT product.

    Pre-requisite Knowledge for using GDAT:

    1. Be computer literate;
    2. Have the ability to work with spreadsheets and large data sets;
    3. Have been working with DNA results at GEDmatch, FamilyTree DNA, My Heritage, or 23andMe for over 12 months;
    4. Understand the concepts of chromosome analysis and can apply them in practice, in particular:
      1. Be able to differentiate between shared matches and shared segments;
      2. Be able to interpret when matches are ICW on a segment;
      3. Understand triangulation concepts and how to identify Triangulated Groups at each DNA site.

    Before joining our user group, it is best if you have already:

    * Set up at least one profile, added a pedigree for that profile and have uploaded segment data from at least one DNA company, such as GEDmatch, FTDNA, 23&Me or My Heritage.  GEDmatch is probably the easiest to start with, utilising Tier 1 tools is recommended for the triangulation report  (but not essential).
