Shut Up & Write...Family History - September 2026 (19 September 2026)

Join us for another SAG "Shut Up & Write... Family History" online session to support anyone with a family history writing project, including our active students.

We will put you through three to four 25-minute sessions of writing, short breaks and then a final discussion on your achievements across the group.

This is not a course but a peer support session - you need to come to the meeting with your own writing tasks to do for yourself. The couple of hours is a way to connect with others and hear about some amazing projects they are undertaking.

About Shut Up & Write

Founded in 2007 in San Francisco, Shut Up & Write! was created by science fiction writer Rennie Saunders, who recognized that many writers struggle to maintain a consistent writing routine. He launched the first chapter at Crossroads Cafe, committing to a weekly meeting with one simple rule: Shut Up and Write! This straightforward approach quickly resonated with writers looking for support and accountability. There are now SU&W meetings held all over the world!

Would you like to investigate your family history but have no idea where to start or have you previously signed up to an online platform but felt overwhelmed by all the information available?

The Society of Australian Genealogists, Australia’s oldest family history society, is excited to again offer our seven part online course “Beginners Practical Introduction to Family History.”

Over the course of seven sessions (two hours per session) you will learn about:

Key tools - family history software platforms, file organisation, research plans
Traditional records (document based) research – types of records, locating records
Electronic databases – Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Findmypast and more
Using maps in family history research
Other resources such as Family History Societies, online forums and education options
Introduction to DNA research including legal and ethical considerations
Various ways to chart, share and publish your findings, including privacy and copyright concerns

While the course will focus on records available in Australia, North America, the United Kingdom and Ireland we will also touch on locating records in other countries and the skills you will learn can be applied to researching ancestors from anywhere in the world.

Commune and Chiesa: Unlocking Online Italian Town and Church Records is a four-week online course delivered in partnership by the Society of Australian Genealogists and Family History Academy, and taught by specialist researcher Barbara Bombaci, CG®. It is designed for family historians who are ready to move beyond what migration records can tell them and work directly in the sources their ancestors left behind.

Italian civil and church records can be extraordinarily rich, capturing multiple generations of family information in a single document, yet they vary considerably by region, period, and record type, and navigating what exists, where it is held, and how to use it requires both knowledge and strategy. This course addresses that directly, guiding participants through records spanning three distinct historical periods and two parallel record-keeping systems, civil and ecclesiastical, with a focus on building transferable skills rather than one-off finds.

Barbara Bombaci brings specialist knowledge of Italian records, repositories, and research strategy to every session. Participants leave not just with new techniques but with a genuine understanding of the Italian archival landscape — and the confidence to keep researching long after the course ends.

What happens to oral history collections when funding ends, projects conclude, or the people who created them move on? If you’re unsure if an oral history will still be safe and accessible in 10, 20 or 50 years’ time, it may be considered precarious.

Join us for a discussion with the Precarious Oral Histories Project, a national initiative working to better understand the extent of at-risk oral histories across Australia, and, as a first step, raise awareness of these collections.

The pilot phase of the Project developed evidence of a preservation crisis facing oral history collections in Victoria. Now, our work extends to focus across the nation, starting with NSW and the ACT.

We will talk about:

the challenges facing community, academic and independent oral history collections
detail why their preservation matters.
the project's approach to understanding “precarity”
introduce the survey used to identify collections
issues preventing the future-proofing of oral histories.

Family History Connect | You're Nicked! (30 September 2026)

You're Nicked!

Part one of this series of talks on genealogy sources and the English legal system focuses on the wealth of information of the Proceedings of the Old Bailey. It is not just the criminals whom the police “nicked” but also the innocent, bystanders and character referees who appear in its records. And if your ancestor was sentenced to transportation to Australia, then the Digital Panopticon may well have information for you.

Join Patrice Connelly as she explains each platform, shows you how to search it, gives examples of the types of crimes to be found in this wonderful resource, and explores its importance in research for multiple disciplines.

And for those of you wondering, in the 17th century, “nicking” was thieves’ slang, synonymous with stealing. In time, “nicking’ shifted to being arrested and placed in “the nick” or prison.

The Source Citations Group is for anyone who wants to learn how to generate citations to meet basic research needs and how to generate citations to meet standards for Diploma's and certificates for Family Historians.

Since 2006 Daniel has been working at MyHeritage liaising with genealogy societies, bloggers, and media, as well as lecturing, and attending conferences around the world.

This practical session is designed for those who are just beginning to explore their AncestryDNA test results. We’ll walk through what you can access without an Ancestry subscription, then delve into the additional tools and features available to subscribers.

Christine will share her personal tips and strategies for making the most of your results. The session includes demonstrations and real-life case studies, with plenty of time set aside for questions and discussion.

Participants will also receive reference materials after the session, along with access to two pre-recorded one-hour webinars that reinforce the content covered.

To get the most out of the session, it helps to have a basic understanding of the different types of DNA tests and their uses. After registering, you’ll receive a link to a one-hour pre-recorded webinar introducing these concepts.

GROUP: GDAT Chromosome Analysis Group (21 November 2026)

If you already have DNA chromosome analysis skills and are planning to use the GDAT database tool to manage your DNA information, you might wish to join our GDAT chromosome analysis user group. SAG user groups are aimed at ‘members helping members’ so this is a collaborative working group aimed at sharing information and knowledge. You must be a SAG member to join this group.

Sessions will include a short presentation on a specified topic identified by the group, followed by discussion between group members, then round table Q&A regarding the product. We will meet 3-4 times a year on Saturday mornings using the Zoom platform. We won’t be recording the sessions, so you must attend live.

Important things to note:

Discussion will be focussed on utilising the GDAT software for DNA analysis, incorporating new chromosome analysis techniques and tools.
Members must have an understanding of the principles of chromosome analysis before joining the group;
Basic chromosome analysis questions WILL NOT be discussed, except in the context of using the GDAT product.

Pre-requisite Knowledge for using GDAT:

Be computer literate;
Have the ability to work with spreadsheets and large data sets;
Have been working with DNA results at chromosome sites such as GEDmatch, FamilyTree DNA and My Heritage ideally for over 12 months;
Understand the concepts of chromosome analysis and can apply them in practice, in particular:
1. Be able to differentiate between shared matches and shared segments;
2. Be able to interpret when matches are ICW on a segment;
3. Understand triangulation concepts and how to identify Triangulated Groups at each DNA site.

Before joining our user group, it is best if you have already:

* Watched the video and undertaken all the tasks in the Quick Start Guide - Setting up;

* Read how the developer (Becky) approaches her DNA analysis, recognising the tool allows for multiple variations - Becky's Process;

* Set up at least one profile, including having added a pedigree for that profile and have uploaded segment data from at least one DNA company, such as GEDmatch, FTDNA, 23&Me or My Heritage. GEDmatch is probably the easiest to start with, utilising Tier 1 tools is recommended for the triangulation report (but not essential).

Any issues arising consult the user guide. If it's not covered in the user guide, submit the question for discussion at the next meeting by posting in the SAG GDAT User Group on Facebook. If the enquiry is more urgent, utilise the ‘Official’ GDAT Facebook User Group.
