Having trouble using our site?

Top menu jumbled or wrapping?

Make sure that your screen resolution and browser window width is high enough. This site is optimised for browser windows of 1100x800 and higher. Even at this window size, if you're using a very large text size, then there may not be enough room to display the whole of the horizontal menu. The item at the right of the sienna coloured horizontal menu should be 'Shop' - if it's not, then at least one menu item has 'wrapped' onto the next line, where it's difficult to see and may cause the whole menu to be difficult to use.

You should be able to fix this by using another combination of text size and browser window width. Experiment with these until you find a combination that suits. You can normally change the font size by hitting the + or - keys while holding down the Control button.

Library catalogue not working properly?

This problem seems to be confined to some installations using Internet Explorer (especially Internet Explorer 7 and above) and Safari, and relates to the blocking of "session cookies".  Our catalogue ('InfoCentre') requires these to keep track of things like the results of a search.  So if you want to learn more about an item in a hit list, or want to move from page to page in a long hit list, the cookie is what lets InfoCentre keep track of where to find the page that needs to be displayed.  So if your browser settings don't allow such cookies, or you have software that blocks such cookies, then you need to adjust your settings to allow session cookies from this site.

To fix this problem in Internet Explorer 7 or above: open your browser, go to Tools, then Internet Options, Privacy, Advanced, and finally Cookies. Place a 'check' on 'Override automatic cookie handling' and another 'check' on 'Always allow session cookies'. Installations using Internet Explorer 6 with default settings need similar action.

Safari installations with cookies set at 'Only from sites you navigate to' need to be changed to 'Always'.

NB: The above explains how to achieve full use of the SAG online library catalogue. However, changing security settings on your computer could have wider consequences and SAG takes no responsibility for any adverse consequences. You may therefore wish to consider checking 'Prompt' instead of 'Always', giving you a chance to review individual session cookies before accepting them.

Text-size and screen-width icons not working?

At the top right of the screen are three icons intended to allow easy changes to the size of text on the site; and another three designed to adjust the screen mode. Not all combinations work on every computer , operating system and/or browser - and/or version of any one browser. The greater the screen resolution, usually the more options are usable.

However, in some computer/system/browser combinations, trying to change the size-width settings causes the screen to blank or to report an error. Closing the browser and re-launching it will generally show our site at the intended new settings. Sometimes a simple click on the Back button will have the same effect!

We're trying to find a more elegant solution to this issue. In the meantime, please bear with us. Or switch to using the Mozila FireFox browser (see below), which seems to be lead to fewer such issues.

Still problems?

We've tried to make our site work with a wide range of browsers, but the way each page displays does depend on your browser, operating system and computer.  Usually the variation is hardly noticeable, but sometimes things do go badly wrong.  If that occurs, one thing to do is to make sure that you have the most recent version of your browser of choice, and update it if necessary.

If the above advice doesn't work for you, we'd like to hear about it.  Please use our feedback form in the footer menu and let us know what the problem is. All you need to do is indicate what browser you are using, what you did or were trying to do, and what happened, in sufficient detail so we can try and replicate the issue and fix it. We'll get back to you as soon as we can and do appreciate your time.
