SAG Christmas Break

The SAG libraries will close at 4pm on Thursday 18 December for the Christmas break. 379 Kent Street reopens for business on Tuesday 6 January at 10am. Any enquiries during this time should be directed to SAG headquarters on (02) 9247 2953.

Legacy User Group

Following its first meeting in October, members have decided they’d like to continue to meet on a regular basis in 2015 to share their interest in this software program and assist each other in getting the most out of it. Further meetings will be advertised in the February – April Activities Calendar which will be released with the December journal. In the meantime they are planning a meeting on Saturday 17 January – see here for details.

FamilyTreeMaker Software Update

Members who use this software will be interested to know that Ancestry has just released a new patch for FTM 2014. It includes a number of new features including improved layout for genealogy reports and sort options for Family Group sheets, new options for timeline reports, changes to data error reports, improved GEDCOM imports and fixes to a number of bugs. This is in lieu of a new product release which they normally do around now and those of you who attended the Duff DownUnder seminar earlier in the year will remember this release was mentioned during those sessions.

If you have the ‘Check for Updates’ box ticked under Tools>Options on your 2014 FTM program it should prompt you next time you open the software to do this download. If you don’t, go to Help>Check for Updates> and it should be detected. You’ll know it’s been successfully installed if when you go to Help>About the version number is shown as 22.0.0. 1334 (64-bit) or 22.0.0 334 (32-bit).

Note the SAG is not selling this update – you must install it yourself as a download.

Waverley Cemetery

Concern has been expressed about the future viability of Waverley Cemetery, an important Sydney cemetery which SAG members transcribed some years ago. The cost of ongoing maintenance is increasing and a new business model has been proposed to generate incomefrom new sources. You can read more about the concerns at or by watching the following You Tube video - There is also an online petition you can sign – see

  • Wednesday 3 December (8.00pm - 9.00pm AEST) - Webinar - DNA Tests for Family Historians
Which parts of the genetic material and its inherited variation can be tested? What commercial products are available and how should the results be interpreted? What do they tell the family historian about their ancestry discovered from genealogical sources? Are we likely to be related to others with the same surname even if there is no documentary evidence? Join eminent UK genealogist Dr Geoff Swinfield for a full overview on what these tests can (and can’t) infer. Bookings essential and limited to SAG members only. Price $10.00.

To provide background to your family's British migratory experience, military history enthusiast Peter Lloyd will provide an overview of the conflicts that occurred during this period of expansion.
