    “Asylum” is perhaps a word that people do not wish to use, but it was certainly a reality of life that carried a great stigma. The institutions were for children and adults who suffered with mental or physical disabilities and often shut away from public life. But who put them into Asylums and why? What was their life like? Were they ever treated and later released? Have records survived and where are they? Finding some answers to these questions may unravel family mysteries.
