Our Resource Centre at 379 Kent Street has two lifts and is equipped with accessible toilet facilities. 

If you prefer not to use the lift you can reach the second floor via the fire stairs.  Please call us on 9299 5151 on approach so we can give you access (there is also an intercom at the front entrance) 

Richmond Villa at 120 Kent Street is an historic three storey property (originally built 1849) and both the seminar room and bathrooms are only accessible via stairs. There is no lift. However the Manuscript & Image collection and stack material can be accessed on the ground floor where wheelchair access can be arranged.

If you require special assistance to use our collections or attend a seminar, please telephone in advance and speak to our staff, who will be happy to try to assist you.

Every year the Society runs an Annual Fundraising Appeal, often highlighting a specific area of the collection or focussing on an area of our operations.  Sometimes this Appeal is to raise funds, in other cases its focus is on an area of need, such as engaging more volunteers. All donations to the Annual Appeal over $2 are tax deductible.

Joint members each need to fill out and return an application form to us.

If you are joining from outside of Australia, GST is not applicable and you should complete our Overseas Application Form.

You can join by email or mail. You can also join in person on your first visit to our library - just bring your completed form with you or we'll give you one to complete when you come in.  You'll be able to use the library facilities straight away.

A bequest is a practical way for you to make a lasting gift to ensure your support for our work and family history research lasts beyond your lifetime.  It can include both a sum of money and your research papers.

You can 'set and forget' the payment of your annual subscription through Direct debit facilities.  Have your annual subscription automatically deducted from your nominated bank account, Visa or Mastercard each year.  Just complete the Direct Debit Agreement form here and return it to us.  You don't have to remember to pay your subs each year, and it helps keep our costs down too.


The Society is a registered charity and donations of $2 or more are tax deductible when made to the Collections Fund.  This Fund is used to purchase library resources and improve the services and facilities for our members.  You can make a donation to the Collection Fund here.

Joining Fee

Payable when you first join in addition to the annual subscription:

  • Ordinary $20.00
  • Concessional (Full pension & full-time students) $10.00

The concessional joining fee is available to Australian residents who hold an Australian Department of Social Security full pension and health rebate card, or are full-time students at an approved Australian educational institution. Documentation is required.

Annual Subscription

Current membership rates as at 1 July 2017 are: 

  • Ordinary $78.00
  • Joint $117.00 (two people in one household.  Both enjoy full membership rights but receive one copy of the journal. Proof of residential address is required. 
  • Affiliate (for organisations) $78.00
